THE SYDNEY MORNING HERALD/A powerful earthquake has struck northern Japan, hitting areas devastated by the 2011 disaster and generating a one-metre tsunami, public broadcaster NHK reported.
There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
The quake hit Miyagi prefecture on Saturday evening local time, triggering a tsunami advisory for a part of the northern coast.
The US Geological Survey put the earthquake strength at magnitude 7.0 and with a depth of 54 kilometres.
