USA TODAY/President Joe Biden committed Friday to “engage diplomatically” with North Korea to pursue the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula, appointing longtime diplomat Sung Kim as special envoy to North Korea to help lead those efforts.

The announcement came at a press conference with South Korean President Moon Jae-in, who Biden welcomed to the White House Friday. Biden said both leaders are “deeply concerned” about the continued nuclear capability of North Korea, which past U.S. administrations have failed to halt.
