THE SYDNEY MORNING HERALD/In one of the largest deployments of soldiers since the end of white minority rule, 25,000 South African troops began taking up positions on Thursday (Friday AEST) to help quell week-long riots sparked by the imprisonment of former president Jacob Zuma.

At least 117 people have been killed in the violence, authorities said.

President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Friday security agencies had identified a number of people suspected of instigating the violence and that his government would not allow “anarchy and mayhem” to prevail.
