CHRONICLING ILLNESS

By World on the Run

ART NEWS – Carolyn Lazard’s installation in the 2019 Whitney Biennial saw a TV monitor attached to a wall by the long arm of an articulated hospital television mount. The Philadelphia and New York–based artist hooked up the museum with cable, and set the monitor to change channels automatically every 30 seconds. Titled Extended Stay, the work was meant to bring hospitalized patients and museumgoers together, allowing them to share the same programs remotely. Connecting the sick and the well through real-time video, Extended Stay speaks to how sick and disabled people have already long practiced many of the new norms that arose in the year 2020.
