National Post – The story of Canada’s participation in World War II is brought to life through a trove of 2,500 images and over 100 video newsreels obtained by Ancestry Canada.

In a striking photo from 1945, dozens of men line the decks of the HMCS Prince Robert, a former luxury cruise ship that Canadians outfitted for battle and that patrolled the high seas all over the world. The black-and-white image captures Canadian military personnel who were liberated from Japanese prisoner-of-war camps arriving in Esquimalt, B.C.
