USA TODAY – Studies by Pfizer-BioNTech, which makes the only COVID-19 vaccine authorized for use in minors, found the shots were about 90% effective against infection. But those studies were conducted earlier in the pandemic, before the omicron outbreak. The two newer studies tracked infections in December and January, as omicron was sweeping across the country, and provide the first real-world evidence of effectiveness against the coronavirus variant. In one study, released Tuesday from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, two doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine provided strong protection – 74% to 94% – against emergency department visits for older adolescents.
