THE SYDNEY MORNING HERALD/Seated in a wheelchair in a courtroom in Phnom Penh, Khieu Samphan looked every bit his 91 years.

The last surviving leader of the murderous Khmer Rouge, he was brought in from his prison cell on Thursday for one final time to learn the outcome of his appeal against a conviction for genocide and crimes against humanity.

As it failed, with the judgments against him upheld, it signalled the end of an era in Cambodia.
