U.S.NEWS – Researchers documented warm ocean water flowing under the glacier that threatens to accelerate sea level rise. The study was published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. “Thwaites is the most unstable place in the Antarctic and contains the equivalent of 60 centimeters of sea level rise,” Christine Dow, a co-author of the study, said in a statement. “The worry is that we are underestimating the speed that the glacier is changing, which would be devastating for coastal communities around the world.” The study authors used satellite imagery and subglacial water monitoring to observe the intrusion of seawater, finding it causes the ice to lift off land before settling down again.
